Terms of Use

These terms set out the rules for using the RusLit service between you and the operator of the service. Please read them before signing up: by creating an account, you accept them.

1. About the service

RusLit is a platform for reading Russian literature in the original: a catalogue of works, a chapter-by-chapter reader, a personal vocabulary, chapter notes and reading clubs. The texts of the works are in the public domain.

Service operator: [OPERATOR NAME], [OPERATOR ADDRESS]. The service is provided [FREE OF CHARGE].

2. Accepting these terms

By signing up, you confirm that you are at least 16 years old, accept these terms and have read the Privacy Policy. The date and version of the terms you accepted are stored in your account.

You can read the catalogue and the works without signing up; for such use, these terms apply except for the parts that concern accounts.

3. Age

You must be at least 16 years old to create and use an account. Some EU countries set a lower age from which people can use online services and consent to the processing of their data on their own - between 13 and 15. The service applies a single threshold of 16 for all users: this is simpler and safer than determining the threshold by country.

If it turns out that an account was created by someone under 16, the account will be deleted.

4. Your account

  • Use a valid email address: emails confirming your address and password changes are sent to it.
  • Do not share your password. You are responsible for actions taken under your account.
  • Your display name is visible to other users. It must not be offensive, misleading or impersonate another person.
  • You can download your data and delete your account in your profile at any time.

5. Your content

You keep the rights to your notes, club notes and club names and descriptions. By posting them, you allow the operator to store and display them free of charge to the extent needed for the service to work: public notes and clubs to all visitors, club notes to club members. This permission lasts as long as the content remains on the service.

Only you can see your private notes and vocabulary.

6. Rules of conduct

The following is not allowed on the service:

  • spam, advertising and links unrelated to reading;
  • insults, threats, harassment and discrimination;
  • illegal content and calls to break the law;
  • infringing other people's rights, including copyright;
  • publishing other people's personal data;
  • impersonating another person;
  • circumventing the service's limits and protection, automated mass posting, interfering with the service.

7. Moderation and sanctions

Any user can report a public note, a club note or a club. Reports are reviewed by moderators; a moderator may also act without a report if they see a violation themselves.

For violations, a moderator may:

  • hide a note, a club note or a club's name and description - hidden content is visible only to its author, marked as hidden;
  • hide a display name - other users see an anonymous label instead;
  • block an account - a blocked user can sign in only in restricted mode: they see the reason for the block and can download their data and delete their account, but cannot do anything else; their public content is hidden.

A blocked user is shown the date of and the reason for the decision when signing in (Article 17 of Regulation (EU) 2022/2065, the Digital Services Act). The author of hidden content sees a note on it saying that it has been hidden, with the category of the reason (without the reporter's comment).

All measures can be reversed. If you disagree with a decision, write to [MODERATION APPEALS EMAIL]; the decision will be reviewed [REVIEW PROCEDURE AND TIMEFRAME].

8. Limits

To prevent abuse, the service applies limits that are the same for everyone: the number of notes per chapter and per day, the number of words in the vocabulary, the number of clubs and applications, and the rate of certain actions. These limits may change.

9. Texts of the works

The texts of the works are in the public domain; annotations and reference materials were prepared for the service. If you find a mistake in a text or believe that material infringes someone's rights, write to [OPERATOR EMAIL].

10. Liability

The service is provided "as is". The operator strives to keep it running smoothly but does not guarantee that it will be free of interruptions and errors. The operator's liability is limited to the extent permitted by [APPLICABLE LAW].

Nothing in these terms limits the rights that mandatory law grants you as a consumer.

11. Termination

You can delete your account in your profile at any time - your data is deleted together with it. The operator may block an account for breaching these terms. The operator will announce the shutdown of the service in advance [NOTICE PERIOD] so that you have time to download your data.

12. Changes to these terms

The version date is shown at the top of this document. The operator will notify you in advance about significant changes [NOTIFICATION METHOD]. If you do not agree with the new version, you can delete your account.

13. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by [APPLICABLE LAW]. Disputes are resolved [DISPUTE RESOLUTION PROCEDURE AND JURISDICTION], without affecting your consumer rights under the law of your country of residence.

14. Contact

[OPERATOR NAME], [OPERATOR ADDRESS], [OPERATOR EMAIL].
