On her name day Princess Vera Sheina receives an unusual present - an old garnet bracelet and a letter from a man who has loved her without hope for many years. Vera's husband and brother think it is a ridiculous and improper affair. A story about a selfless love that asks for nothing in return.

Genèse de l'œuvre

Kuprin wrote the story in 1910 and published it in 1911. It was based on a real story the writer heard from a family he knew.

Contexte

The story is set at a Black Sea resort at the beginning of the twentieth century, among the aristocracy. Thirteen chapters of different lengths and many dialogues make it a text of intermediate difficulty.
